Phoenix Fashion Week 2013

Standard

Last night I attended Phoenix Fashion Week.  You can never go wrong celebrating an evening with fashion and friends.  There was an array of beautiful looks by outstanding designers.  Here is a rundown of my personal favorites.

I was first captivated by the designs of Silvia Bours.  With a Phantom of the Opera theme (masks included) it was indeed a beautiful collection.

I was enthralled by the glamorous looks of Doux Belle, by Rachel Wagner, who reminded us of a time when people took the term “getting dressed” seriously.  The chicness doesn’t stop with her collection either.  If there was a “best dressed” designer of the night my vote would go to Rachel who wore a black long-sleeved flowing dress tied at the waist.

The designs of Michelle Hébert caught my full attention.  I’d been looking forward to seeing this collection for the first time, but was not expecting what came down the runway.  Michelle’s looks were amazing, and as an emerging designer I can only imagine where her talent will take her.

The looks of Trang Nguyen changed the direction of the evening with delicate touches incorporating red, white, and flower appeal.

The epic moment of the night was the grand finale by Rocky Gathercole.  I’ve never heard of this designer before and now I can’t stop thinking about the magic he constructs.

As if that wasn’t enough goodness there was a post Rocky Gathercole still showcased finale, which was my favorite part of the event.

Clothes Minded AZ Blogger Event & Styling Challenge

Standard

On Friday I was able to attend an awesome blogger event hosted by Clothes Minded AZ.  I found out about the festivities last minute and boy am I glad I was able to make it.  The store kicked off its grand opening earlier this year and showcases an array of clothing and accessories to include items from local designers.

Kim, owner of Clothes Minded AZ, opened the event with a sweet introduction about her store.  She was followed by Ashley of The Shine Project who talked about blogging and her line Threads.  Christian from Phenomz and Maggie from Angie both followed with product reviews.

After some refreshments and mingling an impromptu styling challenge was proposed to the bloggers with Phoenix Fashion Week models on hand to assist.  I styled my first look on the lovely Ariah.   The printed skirt caught my eye, and I added a sleeveless lace tank for texture, and a long sleeved chambray shirt knotted at her waist for layering.  I accessorized her look with a statement necklace, beaded earrings, wrap around bracelet, love necklace (I modified it into a bracelet), and a menswear inspired watch.  You can shop all pieces at Clothes Minded AZ with the exception of shoes (models), and Michael Kors watch (stylists own).

My second look was a team effort.  The beautiful Ashley with help from Ariah spotted the white button-detail shorts on a rack and paired them with the black bandeau. This was a perfect base to build upon.  A gold jacket, statement rings, a swirled smooth stone necklace, and a Füchsin sturgis black studded garter purse was added to complete her glam-tough girl look.  You can shop all pieces at Clothes Minded AZ with the exception of shoes (models).  All orders for Angie products (gold jacket) can be special ordered by Kim.

Here’s the fun part!  You can vote on Ariah and Ashley’s looks for the blogger styling challenge by going to Clothes Minded AZ’s Facebook page.  Just click on your favorite look and like it to vote.  Voting ends August 28th at midnight. Please also support the girls in their Phoenix Fashion Week No7 Model of the Year Contest.

Digital Print Fashion at the Phoenix Art Museum

Standard

On Friday I was able to attend the kickoff event for the Phoenix Art Museum’s digital print fashion exhibit.  It will be showcased in the Ellman Fashion Design Gallery from March 2, 2013 through July 14, 2013, and is a must see for any fashion goers in the valley.

What is a digital print?  According to Wikipedia, “digital textile printing, often referred to as direct to garment printing, DTG printing, and digital garment printing is a process of printing on textiles and garments using specialized or modified inkjet technology.”

Before any ink is dispersed or a print hits the fabric an equation or code for the design must be generated on a computer.  Have you ever seen what a printed textile equation looks like?  It’s crazy, like beautiful mind crazy.  The results can at times range from a kaleidoscope effect to a Pink Floyd acid trip.  Behold some of the magnificence.

Alexander McQueen’s spring 2010 collection Plato’s Atlantis, the last he would complete before his death, consisted of thirty-six unique circle-engineered prints.  He described it as, “Darwin’s theory of evolution in reverse.” McQueen and the members of his house began perfecting the digital prints on his garments at a level of haute couture dress making.  McQueen, a master draper himself, showcased the level of his skill while utilizing the prints in his collection with breathtaking results.

“I’ve always loved nature, and it’s just a bit of fun really.” – Alexander McQueen.

This look was from Monique L’Huiller’s spring 2013 runway collection, and now it’s on display at the museum. The color and textures of the Turkish landscape were her inspiration for this collection and she used her own photos shot on location to spark her creativity.

“Inspired by water and life of the sea.  Birds, brightly colored fish, glowing sunlight on water and the luminescence of moonlit waves. ” – Monique L’Huiller
